I call my father “Dad” and I call my mother “Mom”.
ਮੈਂ ਅਪਣੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਡੈਡ ਕਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਮ ਕਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ|
The father of my father is grandfather and I call him, “Grandpa”.
ਮੇਰੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਦੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਗ੍ਰੈੰਡਫਾਦਰ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਉਹਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਗ੍ਰੈੰਡਪਾ ਕਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ|
The mother of my father is grandmother and I call her “Grandma”.

In America we call mother’s father “Grandpa”
ਅਮਰੀਕਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਸੀ ਮਾਤਾ ਦੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਗ੍ਰੈੰਡਪਾ
and call the mother's mother, “Grandma”.
ਅਤੇ ਮਾਤਾ ਦੇ ਮਾਤਾ’ ਨੂੰ ਗ੍ਰੈਂਡਮਾਂ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਾਂ |
In Punjabi language and culture, there are different names for each relationship.
ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਰਿਸ਼ਟਾਚਾਰ (ਕਲਚਰ) ਵਿੱਚ ਹਰ ਇੱਕ ਰਿਸ਼ਤੇ ਲਈ ਇੱਕ ਅਲੱਗ ਨਾਮ ਹੈਂ|
The father of my father is “Dada”.
ਮੇਰੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਦੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਦਾਦਾ ਹਨ|
The mother of my father is “Dadi”.
ਮੇਰੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਦੀ ਮਾਤਾ ਮੇਰੀ ਦਾਦੀ ਹੈ |
The father of my mother is “Nana”.
ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਤਾ ਦੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਨਾਨਾ ਹਨ |
The mother of my mother is “Nani”.
ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਤਾ ਦੀ ਮਾਤਾ ਮੇਰੀ ਨਾਨੀ ਹੈ|
My father has two brothers. One brother is older than him and
one brother is younger than him.
ਮੇਰੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਦੇ ਦੋ ਭਰਾ ਹਨ। ਇੱਕ ਭਰਾ ਉਸਤੋਂ ਵੱਡਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਭਰਾ ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਛੋਟਾ ਹੈ |
I call his older brother Taya and I call his younger brother Chacha.
ਮੈਂ ਪਿਤਾ ਦੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਭਰਾ ਨੂੰ ਤਾਇਆ ਅਤੇ ਛੋਟੇ ਭਰਾ ਤੋਂ ਚਾਚਾ ਕਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ|
The wife of taya is tai.
ਤਾਇਆ ਦੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਤਾਈ ਹੈ
The wife of chacha is chachi.
ਚਾਚਾ ਦੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਚਾਚੀ ਹੈ |
The sister of my father is “Bhua” and I call her Bhua.
ਮੇਰੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਦੇ ਭੈਣ ਮੇਰੀ ਭੂਆ ਹੈ’ ਅਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਭੂਆ ਕਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ|
My Bhua’s husband is fuffar.
ਭੂਆ ਦਾ ਪਤੀ ਫੁੱਫੜ ਹੈਂ|
The brother of my mother is Mama.
ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਤਾ ਦਾ ਭਰਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਾਮਾ ਹੈ |
Mama’s wife is “Mammi”.
ਮਾਮਾ ਦੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਮਾਮੀ ਹੈ |
The sister of mother is “Massi”
ਮਾਤਾ ਦੀ ਭੈਣ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਸੀ ਹੈ |
Massi’s husband is “Massar”
ਮੱਸੀ ਦਾ ਪਤੀ ਮਾਸੜ’ ਹੈ’|
In Punjabi culture, Jee is a symbol of respect and punjabi’s respect for their elders by adding jee at the end of a relationship.
ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸਾਬਿਆਚਾਰ ਵਿਚ “ਜੀ” ਇਕ ਸਤਿਕਾਰ ਦਾ’ਅੱਖਰ ਹੈ, ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵੱਡਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਇੱਜਤ ਰਿਸ਼ਤੇ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਜੀ ਲਾ ਕੇ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ
Usually the younger brothers and sisters are called by their first names.
ਆਮ ਤੋਰ ਤੇ ਛੋਟੇ ਭਰਾ ਅਤੇ’ ਭੈਣ ਨੂੰ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਲ ਬੁਲਾਇਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
The male children of the father and mother’s elder and younger brothers are called nephews, “Bhatejay”. If one it is called Bhatija.
ਪਿਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਤਾ ਦੇ ਭਰਾਵਾ ਦੇ ਲੜਕੇ ਭਤੀਜੇ ਅਤੇ ਜੇ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਭਤੀਜਾ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
The female children of the father and mother’s elder and younger sisters are called nieces, “Bhatijian”. If one it is called “Bhatiji”.
ਪਿਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਤਾ ਦੇ ਭਰਾਵਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਲੜਕੀਆਂ ਭਤੀਜੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਜੇ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਭਤੀਜੀ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ

ਪਿਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਤਾ ਦੇ ਭੈਣਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਲੜਕੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਣਜੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਜੇ ਇੱਕ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਭਾਣਜੀ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ
Brother’s wife is called, “Bhabi”, and it does not matter if the brother is younger or older.
ਭਰਾ ਦੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਬੀ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਫਰਕ’ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਕਿ ਭਰਾ ਵੱਡਾ ਹੈ ਜਾਂ ਛੋਟਾ
Sister’s husband is called, “Jija”.
ਭੈਣ ਦੇ ਪਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਜੀਜਾ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ |
The elder brother’s wife calls me “jeth” and the younger brother’s wife calls me “deor”.
ਵੱਡੇ ਭਰਾ ਦੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਜੇਠ ਕਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਛੋਟੇ ਭਰਾ ਦੀ ਪਤਨੀ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਦਿਉਰ ਕਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ |
I call both of them “Bhabi”. ਮੈ ਦੋਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਬੀ ਬੁਲਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ |
